Hungarian phone numbers consist of seven digits, preceded by the country code and a network prefix. In general, the network prefix represents a mobile carrier or geographic location. Special prefixes also exist: 80 is used for toll-free numbers, meanwhile 90 indicates premium-rate numbers.

The prefixes of mobile numbers refer to the carrier network they belong to: numbers starting with 20 generally represent Telenor subscribers, whereas 70 indicates users of Vodafone.

Area codes of landline numbers represent geographic regions, usually a county. In our example below, 1 means Budapest and 22 stands for County Fejér.
